A Message From Jessica Tartaro

Chair, Ortho Student & Young Professional Task Force

Welcome, Prospective Student or Young Professional Member of Ortho!

As Chair of the Ortho Student & Young Professional Task Force, I am writing with excitement to invite you to become a member of Ortho at no cost to you – as long as  you join before October of 2008!

I myself am a graduate student, currently completing my final year of PhD work in clinical health psychology at Arizona State University. In my roles as senior student and Ortho fellow, I am poignantly aware of the challenge for graduate students who are passionate about social justice to find a “home” for the expression of both professional and activist concerns. Prior to being selected as the Ortho fellow, my own academic and activist pursuits were largely separate.   Joining this organization, I have been thrilled to discover the opportunities available to me by merging my academic training with my deep concern for social justice within a professional organization dedicated to this intersection.

The list of benefits is long for students and young professionals who join Ortho.
  • First year dues for student members are currently waived, and second year membership is only $25, half of the full membership price. This makes joining unbeatable in terms of affordability!
  •   Membership includes a subscription to the prestigious American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, which keeps its readers informed of the most innovative, interdisciplinary, mental health research in the service of social justice.
  • Starting this year, members receive the Ortho Bulletin, a quarterly newsletter with articles reporting on recent and upcoming Ortho events and other issues of interest.
  • Each year, through its awards program, Ortho awards the Vera Paster Award to a graduate student or a post-doctoral resident or fellow in a mental health discipline for support of research and/or public service to advance the rights and well-being of people of color.
  • And the Student/Young Professional Task Force offers opportunities for Ortho students to mobilize in support of causes about which members are passionate.

If you are like me, at this point in your reading you are convinced! Joining is simple. Click here to download the membership brochure. Fill it out and mail it back to me at the Ortho office at Arizona State University. Remember, you can join for two years for only $25!

Interested in joining the Student Task Force? Through this task force, members have a powerful forum for bringing attention to causes related to mental health and justice about which we are passionate. Send me an email at OrthoFellow@gmail.com. Include your name, discipline and the major issue(s) about which you as a student/young professional are most deeply concerned…and we will get to work!

I am deeply proud to be serving you as Ortho Fellow and Chair of the Student & Young Professional Task Force this year. Together, I look forward to extending the legacy of Ortho through a continued justice-minded dialogue that cuts across our disciplines in the service of those most in need.

Warm regards from the Arizona desert!
